Del Campo came into the game Friday night looking to prove once again that they are deserving of last year’s league title. Through 3 quarters, I’m not sure they accomplished that.
The Knights went into halftime with a 7-0 lead on some punishing defense including a couple of interceptions and a fumble recovery, and kept up the pressure in the second half. However, the Knights lost their composure and in the fourth quarter it all fell apart.
With about 5 minutes remaining Del Campo was called for “roughing the punter”. It’s a shame that on the very same play the Knights were called for unsportsmanlike conduct. The penalties offset, and Rio Linda retained possession with a new set of downs. One play later, the Knights were asessed a clipping penalty, and it was all downhill from there. On 4th and 8 with just over 2 minutes left to play, Rio Linda decided to pass the ball, but quarterback Cole Farrow was sacked.
After the Knights had maintained possession for most of the 4th quarter, Del Campo finally took control of the ball and quickly scored a touchdown with a punishing running game. Another touchdown with less than 2 minutes remaining sealed the deal, and the Knights fell in thier first league game of the year, 21-10.
Next week, The Knights take on the Broncos at Bella Vista high.
