The Stay-at-home order restrictions on local barbershops and salons such as the Klip Joint and Cityz Famous Barber Shop are likely to be loosened within “days,” according to Governor Gavin Newsom.
Previously Newsom has maintained that barbers and salons would be allowed to reopen in stage 3 of the State’s four-stage plan for restarting the California economy. The plan is currently in stage 2.
“We are within a week and now days of loosing our stay-at-home order for barbershops and salons. We now have a constructive dialogue with the personal care industry.”

The personal care industry has been largely shut down since mid-March. The Professional Beauty Federation of California has filed a lawsuit against the state, and some salons have gone so far as to re-open in defiance of the order. People from across California and outside the state have been driving hours to visit beauty salons in Sutter and Yuba counties, which have opened their parlors despite Gov. Newsom’s statewide stay-at-home order.
More and more counties are reopening businesses after the governor relaxed state guidelines this week, but officials insist that different regions will move at different speeds – meaning cities like Los Angeles may not open for another month.
“The Bay Area is in a different position than some parts of the state, L.A. County is in a different position than other parts of the state. They can move at their own pace based upon their own local conditions,” Newsom said.
The governor estimated 53 of 58 counties could meet the new criteria.
