SACRAMENTO, Calif. – California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigators were contacted by a concerned citizen who stated they observed possible criminal activity taking place on a rural property in North Highlands. The citizen identified two heavy equipment vehicles they believed to be stolen.
After confirming the vehicles were stolen, CHP investigators conducted a joint operation with the support of the Placer County Regional Auto Theft Task Force (RATTF). RATTF detectives and Valley Division Air Operations responded to the area and conducted surveillance.
Once CHP and RATTF personnel gathered enough intel on the equipment thefts, a search warrant was served recovering a total of five stolen vehicles. During the search of the property a suspect was identified in the case, Scott Christopher Gray, 52, out of Sacramento. Through the investigation, it was determined Grey was on active probation for vehicle theft resulting in a probation search. During the search, Grey was found also to be in possession of stolen personal items from a U-Haul theft that occurred in the area.
CHP investigators coordinated with Sacramento County Probation Department and arrested Gray on multiple felony charges. Gray was then booked into the Sacramento County Jail.
As a result of community awareness this investigation recovered a total of 12 stolen vehicles with an estimated value of $300,000.
