On a perfect night for football, clear and crisp, at a perfect place for football (Sac City College’s Hughes Stadium) the Rio Linda Knights outran the Christian Brothers Falcons 40 – 13 in a CVC league game.
Knights running back Marcel Brown rushed for 167 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback Stephen Andrews rushed for 104 yards and passed for 80 yards and one touchdown. On the defensive side, Aarion McNealy had 10 tackles and an interception.
The Knights improved to 2-0 in league play, 6-1 overall.
A few notes from memory (faulty as it is):
- From the sidelines, it looked like the Falcon’s no-huddle offense had the Knights defense off guard early, but the 1-2 punch of Brown and FB Leo Skattebo put some wind back in the Knights sails before the first quarter was over.
- It’s amazing how good the Hughes Stadium field looks, and the smell of the dirt and grass just “feels” right for football. Rio Linda has nice turf at home but it’s just nothing like the real deal.
- Christian Brothers had two big 4th down stops in the red zone, one on the goal line.
- RL made big hits and big plays. There was a wild circus-catch interception in the second half, but I don’t recall who it was… could have been Burdan or Hunt. It was quite a catch.
A big CVC showdown looms next week when the #10 Knights meet the 6-1 #14 Casa Roble Rams at home for the final home game of the season. It will also be Senior Recognition night. This week Casa Roble beat Bella Vista 52-7. Casa QB Peyton Wilfley passed for 252 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 62 yards and a score.
