It may as well have been a dusty street at sundown in Deadwood. Fridays game between #13 Casa Roble and #8 Rio Linda was a showdown between two unbeaten teams at the top of the Capital Valley Conference.
If you’re a student of the game, it was quite a study in contrasts. The Casa Roble Rams run the spread offense, using three and four receiver sets, while the Knights employ a traditional power run game with Fullback Leonard Skattebo and Tailback Marcel Brown. In fact, on this night Quarterback Stephan Andrews only got to air out the ball on 3 plays, one of which was a spectacular 80+ yard chuck to Keenan Hunt in the 2nd half.
In a bizarre stretch of 2nd quarter downs, possession changed hands 3 times in 4 plays, with a Casa Roble fumble and an interception by Rio Linda’s Zak Burden. Throw a couple of Personal Fouls and a Casa Roble sideline infraction in there and the game came to a near-standstill as the teams went into halftime tied at 21.
Rio Linda ultimately took control of the game when Marcel Brown ran for a touchdown with with 4:00 remaining in the third quarter.
The Knights scored the last three touchdowns of the game and shutout the Rams in the second half.
Brown ended the night with 224 yards and two touchdowns and Skattebo added 76 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.
The Knights “Black Death” defense, led by Skattebo (13 tackles) and James Sanchez (11 tackles, three for loss and two sacks), sacked Casa Roble quarterback Peyton Wilfley eight times for losses.
Rio Linda (7-1, 3-0) takes the CVC lead as they head into Oakmont next week, followed by Del Campo on November 8th.
