RIO LINDA — In a heart-wrenching turn of events, an eight-year-old girl from Rio Linda experienced a moment no child should have to endure: witnessing the horrific demise of her beloved canine companion.
The deputies who responded to the distressing incident were deeply affected by the sorrowful young girl. Three weeks ago, Priscilla Aguilar stood by helplessly as a man callously ran over and took the life of her seven-month-old German Shepherd named Canelo.
Priscilla tearfully recalled, “I was on my knees crying.”
Moved by the tragic situation, two compassionate Sacramento sheriff’s deputies resolved to alleviate Priscilla’s anguish, knowing that they couldn’t restore her lost puppy. Taking special measures, they organized a visit to the Bradshaw Animal Shelter, where Priscilla had the opportunity to interact with playful puppies and select a new companion.
Additionally, the deputies surprised Priscilla with a generous gesture, presenting her with a $500 gift card and a bicycle.
After spending time with three affectionate pups, Priscilla eventually chose Atlas, a four-year-old dog, as her new furry friend.
When asked about her decision, Priscilla explained, “I just feel like he’s special. He’s really playful and awesome, and I have a stronger connection with him.” This choice forged a profound bond between the deputies and the young girl, whose paths had intersected on that fateful and traumatic day.
Deputy Garcia expressed his satisfaction with the outcome, saying, “So for us to be here and see the end of it and have a happy ending, we are really happy about that.”
Authorities investigating the incident determined that the driver intentionally targeted and ran over the dog. The perpetrator now faces charges of animal cruelty.
