Arlington, TX – In a stunning turn of events, the Arizona State Sun Devils, once projected to finish last in the Big 12, have captured the conference championship.
The Arizona State Sun Devils, led by their dynamic duo of quarterback Sam Leavitt and running back Cam Skattebo, captured the Big 12 Championship with a dominant 45-19 victory over Iowa State, fueled by the dominant performance of Rio Linda’s favorite son, running back Cameron Skattebo. This historic win launches ASU into the College Football Playoff, a remarkable achievement for a team that was picked to finish last in the conference preseason poll.
Leavitt was the catalyst for the Sun Devil offense, accounting for four touchdowns. He completed 17 of 24 passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns, while also rushing for 33 yards and a score. Skattebo, the star running back from Rio Linda, California, continued his stellar season with 170 rushing yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns.
The Sun Devils jumped out to an early 10-7 lead, with Leavitt connecting with Melquan Stovall on a crucial fourth-down conversion. ASU then extended their lead in the second quarter with a pair of touchdown runs by Skattebo.
The ASU defense stepped up in the second half, forcing three turnovers that led to 21 points. Xavion Alford and Caleb McCullough led the defensive charge, limiting Iowa State’s offensive output.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Arizona State. The team’s remarkable turnaround, fueled by strong coaching, talented players, and a relentless work ethic, has captured the nation’s attention. With a spot in the College Football Playoff, the Sun Devils have the opportunity to make history and compete for a national championship.
A Cinderella Story
Skattebo, a former Rio Linda High School and Sacramento State standout, has emerged as one of the most dominant running backs in college football. His powerful running style, coupled with his versatility as a receiver, has made him a nightmare for opposing defenses. Against Iowa State, he rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his ability to break tackles and gain yards after contact.
The Sun Devils’ journey to the Big 12 Championship has been nothing short of remarkable. Under the guidance of young head coach Kenny Dillingham, ASU has defied expectations and established itself as a force to be reckoned with. Dillingham’s innovative offensive schemes and his ability to develop talent have been instrumental in the team’s success.
A Bold Play and a Historic Win
One of the defining moments of the game came early in the first quarter when ASU faced a fourth-and-one from their own 34-yard line. Instead of punting, the Sun Devils opted for a deep pass, which gained 63 yards and set up a touchdown. This aggressive play epitomizes the fearless approach that has characterized ASU’s season.
With this victory, the Sun Devils have earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. This is a historic achievement for the program and a testament to the hard work and dedication of the players and coaches.
On Sunday, the College Football Playoff Committee selected ASU as the No. 4 seed in the 2024 College Football Playoff. This marks the program’s first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoff.
