Allen Phillip Pontes, a beloved actor, director, and theatre enthusiast from Rio Linda who starred in such television shows as Doctor Quinn, Medcine Woman, and Highway to Heaven, passed away on November 8, 2024, at the age of 66, after a courageous 16-month battle with a brain tumor. Allen was a graduate of Rio Linda High School, class of 1976.
Born on February 21, 1958, in Rio Linda, California, Allen made an indelible mark on the Sacramento arts scene over the course of his 40-year career.
Allen was the heart of many local productions and spent the past two decades with Main Street Theatre Works (MSTW) in Jackson, where he not only acted in 17 mainstage productions but also directed 15 shows. As a board member and treasurer, he was instrumental in the theatre’s growth, contributing his skills in sound, lighting, set design, and graphic design. His creativity also led to the creation of the MSTW Mercury Theatre Players Radio Shows, where he channeled Orson Welles in a beloved series of fall fundraisers.
In addition to his work with MSTW, Allen was a familiar face in theatres across Northern California. His passion for the stage extended beyond acting—he also worked as a director, sound and lighting designer, and voice-over actor. He founded AP&C Video Productions and was involved with Red Shoe Productions for over 15 years, creating and performing school assemblies.
Survived by his sister Eileen Johnson, daughter Cherrie Park, granddaughter Hannah Radcliff, nephew Michael Johnson, and many other family members and friends, Allen’s loss is deeply felt by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Theresa Pontes.
A celebration of his life will take place on January 11, 2025, at 2 p.m. at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento. A fitting tribute to Allen’s love of film and theatre, the event will feature fond memories, laughter, and a selection of classic cartoons, Little Rascals, and Abbott & Costello shorts. Guests can expect a sugar-filled celebration with Oreos, candy, donuts, and Dr. Pepper, honoring Allen’s sweet tooth and his enduring legacy as an extraordinary actor, director, and friend.
Allen’s passion for the arts and his remarkable contributions to local theatre will never be forgotten. Please join the community in celebrating his vibrant life and remarkable legacy.
