Girlfriend Arrested, Search Continues for Accomplice
Rio Linda, CA – March 3, 2025 – A chilling investigation has concluded with the discovery of the body of Matthew Clark, 47, in a shallow grave on a property located on the 100 block of U Street in Rio Linda. His girlfriend, Sofia Fermin, 38, has been arrested on suspicion of murder, while authorities continue to search for an accomplice, Jerry Mulford, 42.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office initially began investigating Clark’s disappearance in January 2024, after he was reported missing by Fermin’s brother following an argument with his live-in girlfriend. Concerns were raised when Fermin sold Clark’s pickup truck and other belongings.
The investigation intensified in June 2024 when Clark’s truck was found in San Joaquin County. Fingerprints belonging to Jerry Mulford were discovered inside the vehicle.
Further investigation, including interviews and warrants, led detectives to believe that Fermin shot Clark after an argument in December 2023. The investigation indicated his body was likely buried on the U Street property in Rio Linda.
In December 2024, a search warrant was executed at the Rio Linda property by Sheriff’s Detectives and the FBI Evidence Response Team. A shallow grave was discovered, and the mummified remains of Matthew Clark were recovered. An autopsy confirmed Clark’s identity and revealed he had been shot multiple times.
Sofia Fermin was arrested on December 23, 2024, and is currently held without bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. Her next court appearance is scheduled for March 27.
Jerry Mulford, believed to be an accomplice, remains at large and is thought to have fled the state. He is wanted on an active felony warrant for accessory after the fact.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information regarding Jerry Mulford’s whereabouts or this investigation to come forward.
