A little housekeeping today folks…
As many of you know, I was laid off around 3 months ago. Things have been moving along just fine, but I really hoped to be back at work before now. So things are starting to get tight, financially, and it’s time to reach out to the community for a little help.
It costs under $11 per month to keep the website up and running with the webhosting service. The webhost (Dreamhost) provides unlimited disk storage, unlimited bandwidth, the database server, email service, 24/7 support and 100% uptime to keep the site going. They also support the website with security and backups of the data and the database. It’s really a great deal, and if you’re looking for a webhosting service, please give me a call so I can get you set up with them.
So, really, it’s a very good deal for a small amount of money.
I have no money.
That’s where YOU come in. If you are so inclined, if you think this is a benefit to the community, if you enjoy coming here and reading about the history of Rio Linda and Elverta, the trouble with the water district, or timely news from the high school, or Parks and Rec, or the little league… Please consider donating to keep the website online.
Like I said, it’s just a one-time donation of $10.95. It’s a cost I don’t mind paying… I love working on this site. A lot can happen in a few months… we just need to get through this stretch of tough times.
Alternately, you can advertise for as little as $1 per day. Take a look here, or contact me at johntodd@riolindaonline.com for the specifics. With over 500 registered users and a couple hundred visits per day, you can reach a lot of people and target this area at a very low cost.
Now, to the housekeeping…
- Thanks to whomever bought Joyce Buckland’s fantastic and inspiring Rio Linda and Elverta history book through our Amazon link. I believe it paid the website about .63 cents. I immediately put that money back into the website by pouring a cup of coffee, which allowed me to stay awake long enough to create…
- The Rio Linda Webcam page, presented by the Capitol Quarter Midget Association. Seriously, all I did was embed their Ustream camera from the Roy Hayer Memorial Race Track into the page. Easy peasey! I was just so stoked to see that there was a live cam online anywhere in Rio Linda. Big, big thanks to them for providing such a fun resource for the community.
- What do you think of the additions to the site? The high school news feed? Gasbuddy chart?
What else should be here? What should NOT be here? What information, links, or other material do you think should be on this website? - Class Reunions page: Work in progress… If you have an upcoming class reunion, or if you have a class website you want me to link to, drop me a line at johntodd@riolindaonline.com and let’s make this another useful local resource. Thanks to my very own aunt Patty for the suggestion!
- Rio Linda Radio? Rio Linda Online TV? Pie in the sky thinking… the next step… but definitely more “maybe” than “maybe not”. Let’s see what happens.
- Coming soon… Interviews… Twitterviews… a “Best of Rio Linda” feature… More pictures and stories and advertisements from Rio Linda’s history… a trip to the Sacramento archives and the treasures that turn up there.
I need your input! I want your input! I lust for your input!
Questions I have:
- Who would you like to see interviewed?
- What questions do you have about Rio Linda that have never been answered?
- Who’s currently living here, that’s lived here the longest?
- Why do you live here?
- Who’s got the best food in town?
- What’s the best thing on the menu at Papa’s Pizza? Why did they move? What happened to Romano’s?
- What’s going on with the old Front Street Fire Station?
- What’s going on with the old Archway Hardware lot?
- What is there to do on a Friday night around here? Where do you go?
- What’s the real story? President Clinton? Rush Limbaugh?
- Where was Hayer Dam?
- What was the Donut Hole?
- Where was the Pony Express?
- Where did that dang Archway come from?
- Was Rite Auto Body REALLY a theater at one time?
- Why do we have one of the only remaining small airfields in the area? Who’s idea was that?
Face it folks… no-one else “gets” us. Nobody understands RL/E like the people who have lived here. Let me know what will make this site useful to you and our neighbors, and we’ll make this THE community information resource for Rio Linda and Elverta.
I end with a quote from Frank Bartles and Ed Jaymes. As they always said, with great humility, “We thank you for your support.”
