Saturday afternoon around 5:30pm, an Amazon delivery driver ran the stop sign at southbound West 4th Street crossing M Street doing at least 40mph and collided with a sedan full of family members on their way to a memorial service.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident that left at least five people injured. Metro Fire responded and and extricated at least four victims from the red sedan.
Witnesses said the Amazon van rolled multiple times before ending up in the field to the southwest of the intersection. The driver, a 21 year old male, extricated himself from his van, and was then taken to Mercy San Juan experiencing pain in his back and neck, according to scanner traffic.
Initially Metro Fire dispatched the accident as a mass casualty incident and dispatched five medic units; EMS 24, Medic 111, Medic 22, Medic 30, and Medic 41.
The family in the sedan, two women, and two girls, were taken to multiple local hospitals. According to CHP the two children in the sedan were injured by their seat belts.
