It’s not uncommon for fighters competing all the way up to the UFC to have a day job to supplement income to help them survives and provide for their families while hunting down more lucrative contracts with more success.
World Series of Fighting heavyweight Dave Huckaba knows about that struggle, and he’s never been one to complain. As a unionized iron worker, Huckaba actually enjoys a pretty comfortable life outside of fighting so when he gets the chance to step in the cage and compete it’s all about the fun and enjoyment of doing something he loves.
It’s no secret that fighters can face injuries from training or in cage competition, but it was Huckaba’s day job that nearly cost him a limb recently after a horrific accident at work almost took off his hand.
“I’m not quite as fortunate as most of the fighters in the big leagues. Most of the fighters don’t have a day job. Most of them have something going for them. I work construction during the day time and I stepped on a piece of pipe after I came off a ladder and I slipped, and I landed on my back but I ended up sticking my hand out to catch my fall. I landed on a sheet metal stud and it cut my hand in half,” Huckaba explained when speaking to FOX Sports.
The picture of the gruesome injury pretty much showcases just how close Huckaba was to losing his entire hand due to the cut suffered from the sheet metal slicing through his flesh. Sewing it back together was no easy task either, but Huckaba says the doctors did a great job of putting the two pieces back into one to make his hand whole again.
