On March 28, 2021, at approximately 3:48 PM, North Sacramento CHP Area units were dispatched to a call of a possible freeway shooting that occurred in the area of I-5 southbound just south of Arena Boulevard.
Upon arrival to the scene, units discovered that a white Volvo XC90 had stopped on the right shoulder of I-5 southbound following an altercation with another motorist. While contacting the occupants of the Volvo, units discovered a shooting had occurred.
The vehicle had multiple bullet holes and both the male driver and female passenger had sustained gunshot wounds. Units immediately began rendering medical aid to the driver and passenger; however, the male driver succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Shortly after arriving at the scene, Sacramento Fire Department transported the female passenger to a nearby hospital. At approximately 4:04 PM, all lanes of I-5 southbound from Arena Boulevard to I-80 were shut down for investigatory purposes and were reopened at approximately 9:39 PM. Investigators believe this was not a random shooting and there is no danger to the public. The investigation is currently ongoing.
