The Rio Linda Lady Knights’ remarkable season came to a close Saturday night, as they fell 58-40 to Half Moon Bay in the CIF Northern California Division IV regional semifinals. Despite the loss, the Lady Knights finished with an incredible 29-5 record, capping off a season that included an undefeated 14-0 conference run, a Section Final Four appearance, Coach Jerry Huffines‘ 400th career victory, and a coveted spot in the NorCal Final Four.
The game, played on Half Moon Bay’s home court, saw the Lady Knights initially take control, capitalizing on early Cougar turnovers. Junior LaRay Mitchell opened the scoring with a three-pointer, signaling Rio Linda’s intent to challenge from long range. However, Half Moon Bay quickly found their rhythm, unleashing a barrage of three-pointers that ultimately proved decisive.
Half Moon Bay’s Xochitl Nieves led the charge with 15 points, including a crucial stretch of three consecutive three-pointers in the third quarter. Aila Grierson and Makena Glynn also contributed significantly from beyond the arc. Despite a game-high 17 points from Rio Linda’s Mariah Walton, the Lady Knights were unable to contain the Cougars’ hot shooting.
Rio Linda’s early lead, fueled by Mitchell’s three and consistent defensive pressure, showed the team’s determination. Senior Joy Talilefiti also contributed with a three-pointer, highlighting the Lady Knights’ own offensive capabilities. However, Half Moon Bay’s sharp shooting and strong rebounding ultimately allowed them to pull away.

While the loss was disappointing, the Lady Knights’ season was nothing short of extraordinary. Their undefeated conference championship, deep playoff run, and overall 29-5 record stand as a testament to their hard work, dedication, and talent. The Rio Linda community can be immensely proud of the Lady Knights’ accomplishments this season. The Lady Knights had a season to remember and they cemented themselves as a powerhouse team in 2026, when Coach Hufines returns many of his very young team.
Go Lday Knights! Can’t wait for next season.
