Silly, bizarre, weird. Whatever you want to call it, this year’s prep football season (which should have taken place last year) is anything but typical.
Tonight, the Rio Linda Knights walk into their 4th game of the year against Oakmont of Roseville. It is the next-to-last game of the season and is also the home opener.
During a typical season, this would be the first league game of the season. This year, it’s the last league game of the season and the last opportunity for the Knights to get a league win for the 2021 Spring season.
The Knights began the season with an in-league loss at Ponderosa. The following week should have seen Rio Linda facing perennial Sierra Valley League powerhouse Placer in Rio Linda for the home opener. However, a positive test from the Placer team forced Knights head coach Josh Caton to go searching for a game. He found one at Galt High School, who had their scheduled game for that week canceled due to a positive test among the El Dorado team they were slated to face. The misfortune for Galt was multiplied by the loss that the Knights handed them, 21-8.
After a forgettable loss at Lincoln last week, The Knights have their very last opportunity to pick up a win within the SVL, hosting the Oakmont Vikings at home, tonight.
Oakmont brings an undefeated 2-0 record to Marion Adams Memorial Stadium, having beaten Ponderosa in March and Antelope in April.
The Knights come in with a 1-2 record, and a chip on their shoulders, intent on winning the last two games and getting out of this COVID season with a winning record.
Tickets have been limited to 4 per player and have already been allocated via email. There will be no tickets available for sale at the gate this week or next. All attendees MUST WEAR face masks upon entering the stadium and throughout the duration of the game.
Game time is 7pm. Please remember to socially distance and sit with your immediate household.
Barring any COVID-related scheduling changes, the Knights will finish up the season hosting Foothill High School next week on April 16th.
