Picture a suburban Placer County football stadium…
The Rio Linda Knights walked into Roseville’s Hansen Field expecting a football game. What they ended up with was a bit of the Twilight Zone.
With 5 seconds left on the clock, and the Tigers leading 16-14, the Knights were lining up for a game winning walk-off field goal. That’s when Rod Serling stepped in.
Roseville PA announcer Ron Grove collapsed on the microphone. Play was stopped, and medical personnel rushed to the press box.
With Grove stabilized, the ambulance drove off the field and play resumed. The field goal attempt was blocked. The loose ball was gathered up by Roseville’s Jake Vaughn who rambled into the end zone for a touchdown. There was no time left on the clock. Tigers win, 22-14.
Can you hear the music?
The Knights had 1st and 10 at the Roseville 14 yard line with 90 seconds left to play. Rio Linda missed the first field goal attempt with less than ten seconds left to play. However, Roseville was called for a penalty which gave Rio Linda a first down inside the five-yard line. After a broken run play, the Knights set up for the final field goal attempt when play was stopped for the medical emergency.
Tough loss for the Knights, who face Antelope next week in the home opener.
Notes: Leonard Skattebo scored both RL touchdowns. The Knights played without running back Marcel Brown due to a one-game suspension for a team violation.
SacBee.com reports that Grove is alert at the hospital and was undergoing further tests.
