Sacramento County Supervisors gave the thumbs up today to final district boundaries in line with population changes over the last decade – shifting the Elverta and Rio Linda communities into Board Chairwoman Roberta MacGlashan’s District 4.
And Fair Oaks, in line to remain divided between Supervisor Susan Peters’ District 3 as well as District 4, will shift entirely to Peters’ District.
The unanimous decision, carried out in amicable fashion, will get a final supervisors’ vote on Sept.20. It followed months of board hearings and community meetings and trial maps.
Supervisors were required, wherever possible, to keep communities intact and constituencies cohesive.
To that end, members of the Sacramento Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community formed their own redistricting committee and successfully advocated for their interest group. They succeeded in their goals , becoming a key player in extending Joe Serna’s District 1 southward into the northern portion of Old Land Park and into other areas where many of their constituents reside.
Among other neighborhoods, District 1 also was extended to encompass East Sacramento, Cal Expo and the Depot Park neighborhood southeast of Tahoe Park.
Supervisor Jimmy Yee’s District 2, which lost a portion of Old Land Park, did expand eastward to carve out a section of South Florin and Churchill Downs, which for the last decade has been part of Supervisor Don Nottoli’s District 5.
The significant changes were the result of vast population growth over the decade since the 2000 U.S. Census.
