California will end its statewide mask mandate for K-12 schools at the stroke of midnight March 12, Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office announced on Monday.
Also, starting Tuesday, March 1, the state is dropping mask requirements for unvaccinated people, though they will be “strongly recommended for all individuals in most indoor settings.” Masks are still required in high transmission areas like buses, hospitals, homeless shelters and long-term care facilities.
“California continues to adjust our policies based on the latest data and science, applying what we’ve learned over the past two years to guide our response to the pandemic.”

This action is consistent with recent guidance from the CDC and is in alignment with both Oregon and Washington. TRUSD is shifting from masks being “required for students” to “strongly recommended.”
Guidance on staff masking will come from Cal/OSHA.
According to communication from the Tein Rivers Unified School District on Monday, the masking requirement for students is lifted on Friday, March 11 at 11:59 p.m., which means the first school day that masks will no longer be required is Monday, March 14.
TRUSD also said that some students may feel it is prudent to continue wearing a mask while at school, and the district stresses that all students and their choices regarding masking will be respected.
