Crews spent Monday boarding up windows and sweeping up several thousand dollars worth of broken glass at Rio Linda Elementary School.
Early Monday morning, vandals broke 23 windows using a pellet gun. A neighbor heard a pellet gun being fired Monday morning and called the Twin Rivers Police Department.
When the TRPD officers arrived, one guy was in the act of climbing over a fence and another was found by the Sheriff’s helicopter.
Two men were arrested: Bradley Sletto and Kyle Copley.
“Every time they vandalize the school that’s one more playground ball, one more basketball, one more soccer net that the kids don’t have ‘cuz it takes the money right out of our budgets. Where it should be for the kids, now we’re doing it for vandalism,” said maintenance worker Jerry Moore.
Two things stand out here: Police only knew about the c rime because a resident called the police. Secondly, it was the TRPD that responded. I doubt the Sheriff’s department, as cut-back as they are, could have responded faster.
Lastly, if the school had not bee closed and boarded up in the first place, presenting an abandoned target of opportunity, this may not have happened at all.
